Multihulls generally offer greater stability at anchor and sail without heeling. They are also more fuel-efficient and provide more spacious accommodations compared to single-hulled yachts.
A monohull has a single hull, while a multihull can have two or three. If it has two hulls, it's called a catamaran, and if it has three, it's a trimaran.
Typically a multihull is faster than a monohull. A catamaran or trimarans wider beam provides them with ability to carry more sail and sail faster than a monohull. Gregor Tarjan’s reference book “Catamarans, The Complete Guide for Cruising Sailors” lists both advantages and some disadvantages of multihulls.
People generally experience less seasickness on catamarans and trimarans compared to monohulls due to their greater stability. However, trimarans such as the NEEL trimaran range may offer even more stability and a smoother ride in rough conditions due to their three-hull design.
Finding berthing places for wider multihulls can be more challenging during high season sailing. Additionally, they often have higher initial costs and can be more challenging to handle in tight spaces or crowded harbors.
