NEEL trimarans are presently the only production multihull on the market with full “basements”. These spaces are under the main deck house important machinery, systems and engine. Owners of NEEL’s have standing headroom and even install full workshops and store heavy items such as batteries and tanks there. Thanks to this innovation all the weights are centered and low in the boat. Consequently this contributes greatly to safety and comfort. Sailors can easily access the systems for maintenance, considerably aiding their reliability. Also the weight centering greatly enhances the boats’ sailing dynamics by easing the strains on the structure and making the ride more comfortable and safer.
NEEL-TRIMARANS are expertly constructed open ocean cruising yachts with dozens of circumnavigations under their belt. Construction is carbon re-enforcements in high load areas, vacuum bagged infused polyester/foam eliminating the risks of osmotic blistering as found on some balsa wood core production catamarans. NEEL-TRIMARANS are characterized by their wide beam (only about 1’ wider than a typical catamaran of the same length) which provides them with exceptional stability, space and performance. Centered weights and intelligent choices of materials easily provide NEELs with a 220-mile travel radius within a 24-hour period. These unique trimarans are open ocean greyhounds. We consider them the safest yachts afloat thanks to 6-8 watertight compartments, more than any other boat in their class. The cost of a trimaran can vary widely, with prices typically starting around $100,000 for smaller models. High-performance or luxury trimarans can cost several million dollars, especially for custom-built or larger vessels.
Both catamarans and trimarans are generally considered safer as they have more watertight compartments than monohulls. Trimarans such as the NEEL 52 tend to offer more stability due to their third hull and because of their higher speed are able to outrun bad weather compared to catamarans or monohulls.
A trimaran is slightly wider than a catamaran, making it more difficult to find marina space at times. Additionally, with only one rudder, engine, and keel, compared to a catamaran's two of each, maneuvering can be more challenging.
Trimarans are designed for stability and are less likely to capsize than monohulls, though smaller sport trimarans under 30' can still capsize in extreme conditions like high winds or large waves. Larger cruising trimarans over 40' have are much heavier and have a wide beam which makes them almost immune to capsizing.
This depends on several factors such as design focus, length and sailarea to displacement ratio. Speeds of large cruising trimarans such as the NEEL 52 trimaran can reach over 25 knots while smaller trimarans such as the Corsair or Dragonfly can safely sail in the mid teens.
